Sick Day Guidelines
Your Child Must Stay Home From School If He/She:
-Has a fever of 100.4 or higher
-Has been vomiting or has diarrhea
-Has conjunctivitis treated less than 24 hours
-Is diagnosed with strep throat
-Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as:
-Excessive tiredness
-Excessive cough or sneezing
-Headache, body aches, ear aches
-Sore throat- a minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but strep throat can occur with or without fever, and may include other symptoms such as headache, upset stomach, or cold symptoms. Contact your pediatrician to determine if your child needs a throat culture.
Your Child May Return to School:
-Once temperature has been normal for 24 hours without medication
-Your child has had no vomiting/diarrhea episodes for 24 hours
-Once you child has been on antibiotics for 24 hours
*Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness*
*Cold medication and cough drops are not available in the nurse’s office, but if you feel your child needs them, you may bring them in to the nurse’s office in the original container with a note from a parent/guardian stating permission for administration by the school nurse.
